4 Commands All Traveling Dogs Should Know

Sit. Stay. Fetch. These are all popular commands to teach your dog. However, traveling requires a bit more training. Otherwise, you may create a threatening environment for your pet and other travelers. Here are four commands your loyal companion needs to be comfortable with before hitting the road.

1. With Me

Perhaps the most important command of them all is ‘with me.’ When your pet hears this, they must immediately walk next to you. It is such a helpful command when crossing the street, moving through large crowds, or whenever another dog is present.

This command is also necessary if you have a service animal. How to make my dog a service dog? This is a commonly asked question among pet owners, and the first step is to train your dog to become a service animal. Many choose to do this themselves, while others prefer hiring a professional trainer.

2. Wait

This command comes in handy when you notice your pet is getting antsy. For example, if they’re about to get out of the car, you want them to jump out whenever it’s safe. Teaching them ‘wait’ ensures this.

Likewise, if you’re traveling on a boat, you can use this command to prevent them from jumping off too soon. You shouldn’t use the ‘wait’ command for an extended period. Also, regardless of how well trained your pup is, never leave their side thinking they’ll be right where you left them when you come back.

3. Go Potty

There’s nothing worse than your pet relieving themselves where they shouldn’t. When traveling, you want to ensure your pet is comfortable. Part of this experience is letting them know where it’s okay to ‘go potty’ whether you’re driving or flying.

For this, pick a good area for them to go about their business. Then, take them to that area and say, ‘go potty.’ They will know what to do. Just know that it can sometimes take a while, so be patient with them and don’t rush them. Be sure to give them a treat afterward to reinforce this behavior.

4. Leave It

There will always be things that spark your dog’s attention. However, when this thing is another animal or a person enjoying their lunch, the phrase ‘leave it’ will help your pup understand not to go near that object.

Don’t overuse this command, especially since sniffing is essential for your dog’s health. Only use it when necessary. Traveling poses a lot of scenarios where your pet will need to back off and stay near you. You’ll be happy they learned this command; be sure to reward them with a treat.

Safe Travels With Your Loyal Companion

These commands need to be taught and practiced before embarking on the trip. They take time and patience. It’s a good idea to start teaching your pet these commands even if you don’t plan on traveling anytime soon. When the time comes to hit the road, they’ll be ready for adventure.
