Avoid Doing These 6 Things When Travelling Abroad

Whether it is a leisure trip or you are going abroad for business or school, it is always exciting to go to a new place. Beyond the excitement is that little concern that you may not do things right when you get there. Well, places are different and so are people, and you need to be ready for this change. You need to know what to do, how to do it, and when to do it. Above all, you need to know what not to do. Doing the wrong thing could make your trip the worst ever. Here is a look at some of the things you should never do while travelling abroad.

1. Disrespect the Culture

Before you travel, take some time to research the culture of your destination. When you get there, remember to have respect for this culture and adhere to the people’s practices. This way, the people will open up to you, and it will help you blend in with your hosts. As it is said, when you go to Rome do as the Romans do!

2. Public Display of Affection

It is okay to kiss and hug in public in some countries but in others, it is considered wrong, and in a few, it is an offence. Even if you are on honeymoon, only show affection behind closed doors to be safe. You do not want to end up in prison just for kissing someone, right?

3. Improper Dressing

What you may think is decent dressing may be considered inappropriate in some countries. Find out how the people in your host country dress and follow suit. For instance, you cannot go to the Vatican dressed in shorts and tank tops.

4. Using Gestures Inappropriately

Using gestures is known to complement communication, but gestures can be misinterpreted if used inappropriately. Learn about the gestures of the country you are visiting and use them appropriately. A good example is shaking of the head; in India, it means yes, while in most other countries it means no.

5. Making Fun of the Local Language or the People

The local language of the country you are visiting may sound funny to you, but to them, it is what they use to communicate. To say the very least the people love their language. Avoid laughing at how people speak as they may feel disrespected, and they can retaliate. Respect the people, their ways and their language, and you will have a peaceful trip.

6. Travelling Without Travel Insurance

As you travel, you hope for the best, but you need to be prepared for the worst. Travel insurance covers you against unexpected medical costs, stolen belongings and personal liability, and with it, you will be ready for your trip abroad. Never travel overseas without insurance. With this, you can enjoy your stay without any concerns lingering on your mind.

Avoid doing the above things when travelling abroad and you will have a great stay. Whether you are visiting for only a few days or you will be there for years, avoiding the above will help you enjoy your stay and get to explore freely.
