Located in the authentic Mallorcan town of Santanyí on the southeast coast, Can Ferrereta welcomes all as it opens up this lesser-known part of the island for the first time. The Soldevila-Ferrer family, who also own Sant Francesc Hotel Singular in Palma, have meticulously restored a historic 17thcentury building, transforming it into a stunning 32-room hotel surrounded by verdant gardens.
It is home to a Mediterranean restaurant OCRE, a poolside all-day dining restaurant and bar LA FRESCA, a beautifully designed spa SA CALMA with hammam, indoor pool and gym, as well as a tranquil library, curated by the expert team at Maison Assouline. Can Ferrereta is reminiscent of a grand summer house, with space, natural light and textures blurring the lines between indoor and outdoor living.
Can Ferrereta – Design & Art
The launch brings together the latest creative talent from Spain, including Mallorcan-based BASTIDAS Architecture and Spanish design house WIT who have worked alongside the Soldevila-Ferrer family and carefully overseen the project from start to finish. During the restoration of the main 17th-century building, the team was mindful of the history and tradition, while the hotel’s two new structures have been sensitively developed in harmony with its original features. Rustic wooden beams and original stonework in juxtaposition with sleek furnishings and contemporary art.
Art will be a distinguishing quality of the hotel, with a focus on local and Spanish artists. Some of the pieces will come from the Soldevila-Ferrer family’s private collection and will include work by the likes of Guillem Nadal, Dominica Sanchez, Miquel Planas, Manolo Ballesteros, Riera i Aragó and Jordi Alcaraz. Sitting pride of place by the main garden and swimming pool, a stunning 2 metre, 280-kilo visage sculpture by the renowned Barcelona-born Jaume Plensa is sure to become a focal point of the hotel. Additionally, contemporary photography by local Barbara Vidal, will adorn the walls, featuring images of the original buildings before the renovation.
Can Ferrereta – Stay
Can Ferrereta will house 32 rooms, most of which are suites with private patios and terraces, overlooking the lush gardens. Light fabrics and dark furniture used in the guest rooms create a sense of simplicity and modest village life, whilst maintaining comfort and refined sophistication throughout. Texture plays an important role in the design – walls have been splayed in mortar rough coats, bedheads woven from hemp rope by local artisans and Santanyí stone is a defining feature.
From Deluxe rooms to the hotel’s signature Pool Suite with its own private sundeck, garden and pool, the rooms are individually designed with bespoke furniture and hand-picked art. By day, guests will spend long and lazy afternoons by the 25m swimming pool, surrounded by flourishing gardens bursting with Mediterranean plants, cypresses, olive trees, jasmine and iconic purple bougainvillaea.
Can Ferrereta – Spa
The SA CALMA SPA invites guests to adopt local village life and slow down, through an innovative menu of multi-sensory, Mediterranean-infused treatments. The spa embraces Mallorca’s distinct personality and local landmarks including the beautiful Es Trenc beach, inspiring each of the signature treatments. Flor de Sal, microalgae, sea mud and natural local products such as rosemary, lavender, lemons and oranges from Sóller will be used alongside bespoke products by Anne Semonin.
Clean lines, natural materials and stone create a tranquil space where guests can unwind in the lounge area, indoor heated pool, hammam and sauna. Alongside the signature treatments, guests can also book in for a massage, facial and various beauty treatments, as well as yoga and meditation classes. They will also have access to the 24/7 gym.
Can Ferrereta – Eat
Can Ferrereta’s signature restaurant OCRE occupies the former wine cellar and guests can choose to dine al fresco on the Mallorcan patio or under the original wooden beams and stone arches, one of which has graffiti dating from the 17th century. Overseen by Chef Alvar Albaladejo, it will serve simple and seasonal Mediterranean fare, made from local produce, much of which will come from Santanyí’s much-loved food market.
On market days, Alvar and his team will create a special lunch menu inspired by the delicious, fresh produce on sale that day. For more casual drinking and dining, guests will enjoy the poolside bar and restaurant LA FRESCA. It’s name refers to the Mallorcan expression ‘prendre la fresca’ associated with cooling down in summer and this is exactly what guests will do here. It will be the perfect spot to relax amidst the garden, with fresh meat, fish and salads alongside an extensive wine and cocktails menu.
Can Ferrereta – Destination
Santanyí is situated in one of the most authentic and historic locations in southeast Mallorca, occupying a privileged position slightly inland from more than 48km of spectacular coastline. It is a small, formally walled town that historically protected its people from pirate invasions and is known as the ‘gold-stone village’. It is the source of the golden sandstone (which is still quarried today) used in Palma’s cathedral and La Llotja among others. Santanyí is next to the second-largest nature park in the Balearics, Mondragó Natural Park, a paradise for hiking and nature lovers. It also offers easy access to some of Mallorca’s most beautiful and unspoilt beaches, with fine-grained white sand, hidden coves and crystal-clear seas such as s’Amarador and Cala Santanyí and Cala Llombards.
The streets around the church in Santanyí host one of Mallorca’s liveliest markets on Wednesdays and Saturdays, selling fresh fruit, vegetables, delicatessen products and local handicrafts. The area is also home to several vineyards which guests can visit for tours and tastings. Over the years, Santanyí has attracted many international artists and today, art plays a central role. Guests will stumble upon various galleries and workshops in the narrow alleys of this quiet country town. There is currently only one small boutique hotel in Santanyí, meaning the exciting opening of Can Ferrereta will open up this destination to discerning luxury travellers for the first time.
The opening of Can Ferrereta will create a new and exciting Mallorcan twin-centre trip with sister hotel Sant Francesc, Palma as the hotels are only 40 minutes apart. Fans of Sant Francesc, which is situated in the heart of Palma’s historical quarter, will recognise the synergy in design, whilst appreciating the unique heritage of the two historical buildings. Sant Francesc offers the perfect base to explore the cultural highlights of Palma before heading to the coast to relax in Santanyí.
Can Ferrereta is open to adults and children over 14. Rates for Can Ferrereta will start from €315 inclusive of breakfast. Santanyí is a 40-minute drive from Palma. For reservations, please contact [email protected] or call +34 971 495 131
