Anyoung Haseyo! You don’t have to travel all the way to South Korea to watch the globally acclaimed Korean Comedy NANTA Cookin’ because they will return to Singapore to cook up a storm with their famed non-verbal “live” theatrical performance. Trained by the original cast which performed at Broadway New York, the cast to perform in Singapore will be staging five shows at Resorts World® Sentosa (RWS), Asia’s premier destination resort, from 10 to 13 July this year!
What’s The Show About?
NANTA is a comic musical non-verbal performance derived from the traditional Korean instrumental performance, “Samulnori.” With the kitchen as its backdrop, chefs its main characters, knives and other kitchen utensils are transformed into musical instruments in the hands of the performers. They thrill the audience with acrobatic cooking moves, a surprise wedding ceremony, and an exciting dumpling challenge.
NANTA has been one of the most popular shows in Korea ever since it premiered in October 1997, drawing the largest number of spectators in Korean stage history. It made its international debut in 1999 at Edinburgh Fringe Festival, where it received an award for the best performance. Since then, it has been staged in the U.K., Germany, Austria, Italy, Japan, Taiwan, Singapore, the Netherlands, Australia, etc. Eventually the show made it all the way to New York, premiering at the Minetta Lane Theater on 7 March 2004 and ran for one and a half years. NANTA was also the first Asian show to open its own off-Broadway theatre!
Till date, this longest running and globally acclaimed South Korean show has played to eight million audiences around the world in over 285 cities including London, Berlin and Tokyo. The success of the show can be attributed to its high energy performance and high audience participation where they are invited to a dumpling challenge or play the role of a Korean wedding couple in the show.
The Story Behind The Cooking
NANTA (COOKIN’), which means “to strike relentlessly”, tells the comedic adventure of four chefs trying to put together a wedding banquet in a short period of time. The first-of-its-kind hilarious musical in Asia turns everyday kitchen utensils into a highly-explosive “live” performance based on the traditional Korean rhythms, samulnori.
