Habitat for Humanity Bare Your Sole 2013 opened registration for this year’s 2.5km / 5km barefoot walk which is set to take place on Saturday, 1 June at Gardens by the Bay East, Tanjong Rhu.
I am usually not a fan of corporate CSR activities as I find them kind of for show only. But this 5th Annual Bare Your Sole Walk with Habitat for Humanity convinced me that it played a direct role with alleviating the living space of our less privileged Singaporeans. By participating in this year’s barefoot walk, we will be helping to raise funds for Habitat for Humanity Singapore’s ‘Project Homeworks’.
The project was conceived to improve the living conditions of Singapore’s elderly, sick and physically-challenged citizens living in one-room flats all over the island. In Singapore, as many as 35,000 people are living alone in unsafe and unsanitary conditions. Being elderly, sick or handicapped, these people are unable to clean their homes effectively.
Habitat-Barclays Bare Your Sole 2013 will help raise funds for these local beneficiaries and increase awareness for the project. Through ‘Project Homeworks’, volunteers are mobilised to help clean-up these homes and in turn, improve the lives of many Singaporeans.
Project HomeWorks is not an easy task. In addition to the mammoth task of helping to clean, sanitize, paint, move in new furniture etc., there is sometimes resistance from the elderly as they can initially be reluctant to let people into their homes – they are embarrassed or too proud to admit that they are alone and need help. But based on what we’ve seen, they are always are extremely happy after seeing the final results of their home “makeover”.
Earlier this month the Habitat and Barclays teams, along with other volunteers, went down to an HDB at North Bridge Road to help some elderly people there. One of the residents they helped was Madam Choong Fong Lan who is 100 years old and has been a resident there for 40 years.
