Last night, I had the pleasure of attending the opening night of Miss Saigon at the Sands Theatre, Marina Bay Sands, and I can confidently say it was an experience that left a lasting impression. Presented by Base Entertainment Asia in association with GWB Entertainment, this production of Miss Saigon is nothing short of spectacular, and I’m thrilled to share just how much I enjoyed it.
Miss Saigon Musical – A Cast That Truly Shines
From the moment the curtains rose, I was captivated by the sheer talent of the cast. Seann Miley Moore, who plays the notorious Engineer, brought an incredible mix of charisma and cunning to the role, making every scene he was in utterly riveting. Nigel Huckle’s portrayal of Chris was heartfelt and genuine, and his chemistry with Abigail Adriano, who plays Kim, was palpable. Speaking of Kim, Adriano’s performance was nothing short of breathtaking. She brought such depth and emotion to the role, reminding me why this character has become so iconic in the world of musical theatre.
I was also delighted to see Louisa Vilinne, who was raised in Singapore, take on the role of alternate Kim. Though she wasn’t performing the night I attended, I’ve heard great things about her, and it’s exciting to see local talent shining on such a big stage.
Raised in Singapore, Louisa Vilinne also joins the company as an alternate Kim. Vilinne recently played the cover role of Zoe and Mei in the State Theatre Company South Australia’s Single Asian Female. Miss Saigon marks her first international tour.
Completing the company are Aday Velasco, Annabelle Rosewarne, Asmara Soekotjo, Atsushi Okumura, Bailey Nathan-Park, Brad Veitch, Carlo Boumouglbay, Celine Cleveland, David Duketis, David Ouch, Ellie Chan, Emily Huynh, Gelina Enriquez, Hamish Johnston, Jack Connor Rowan, Jiho Hwang, Leyton Holmes, Louis Stockil, Michael Boyle, Mikaila Imaguchi, Natasha Dumlao, Nicholas Kong, Paloma Renouf, Patrick Jeremy, Robbie Mejica, Sam Ward, Sara Haruta, Shannon Cheong, Tamsyn Thomas, Tetsuya Okubo, Tony Oxybel, Trevor Santos, Vi Lam and Winchester Lopez.
Miss Saigon Musical – An Emotional Journey
Miss Saigon is a story of love, sacrifice, and the devastating impact of war, and this production did not shy away from the raw emotions at its core. The story of Kim, a young Vietnamese woman who falls in love with an American G.I. named Chris, is as powerful and relevant today as it was when the musical first premiered. The scenes depicting the fall of Saigon were particularly intense, leaving the audience on the edge of their seats.
One of the highlights for me was the iconic number “The Movie in My Mind,” where the female characters express their dreams of escaping their harsh realities. The hauntingly beautiful melody, combined with the emotional delivery by the cast, sent shivers down my spine.
Miss Saigon Musical – Stunning Visuals and Music
Visually, the production is a feast for the eyes. The set design by Totie Driver and Matt Kinley perfectly captures the contrasting worlds of bustling Saigon and the haunting remnants of a war-torn landscape. The lighting by Bruno Poet and the projections by Luke Halls added layers of depth to each scene, making the entire experience feel incredibly immersive.
And of course, the music! The 17-piece orchestra brought Claude-Michel Schönberg’s score to life in a way that was both powerful and moving. From the upbeat energy of “The Heat is On in Saigon” to the heart-wrenching “Last Night of the World,” every song resonated deeply with the audience. The emotional climax during “American Dream” was particularly striking, showcasing the incredible range of the cast and musicians alike.
Miss Saigon Musical – A Night to Remember
In all honesty, Miss Saigon at Marina Bay Sands exceeded all my expectations. It’s not just a musical; it’s an emotional journey that stays with you long after the final curtain falls. Cameron Mackintosh’s production is a testament to the enduring power of this story, and it’s easy to see why it has won so many awards and captured the hearts of millions worldwide.
If you have the chance to see Miss Saigon during its limited run, don’t hesitate. It’s a theatrical experience that you won’t want to miss. Whether you’re a longtime fan or new to the musical, this production will leave you in awe of the incredible talent on stage and the timeless story it tells.
