People list moving to a new home among the most stressful experiences. Experts rank it with divorce and even death of a loved one. Moving doesn’t seem as severe as a family member dying. But think about it carefully, and there are parallels. Here’s what you can do to make sure moving day goes as smoothly as possible.
You’re:
- Saying goodbye to somewhere that has been your home and a haven for several years. Even if it’s a dump, it’s still familiar and feels safe to you.
- You are changing your life, especially if you’re moving to a new town. You need to make new friends, find a new doctor, learn your way around the city, etc.
- You have to pack up everything that you own and move it. Packing and moving are stressful because they entail a lot of work, and there’s always a chance that something precious may get broken.
Anyway, most of us dislike moving. It’s not fun, but there are things that you can do to make moving day go smoothly.
Start By Packing Smartly
We recommend packing one room at a time and labelling the boxes clearly. Think about what you’ll need your first night and next morning in your new home – bedding, a coffee pot, cutlery, etc., and put them in a separate box to be packed last, so they come out of the moving truck first.
Alternatively, consider putting these items in your car, so you know exactly where they are.
Change Your Address Before Moving
Give the companies that you deal with advance notice of the address change so they can update their records. You also need to notify state and federal agencies.
We recommend either taking time off to make you do all of this correctly. Or, sign up for the United Postal service change of address. The post office charges a fee, but it saves you making multiple phone calls or driving around town.
Find Out Where the Nearest Drugstore Is In Town
It’s not uncommon to hurt yourself during a move. Picking up a box the wrong way can easily strain your back. Then, consider the stress, drive time if you’ve been in the car for a while, and fractious kids as well.
Find out where the nearest drugstore is in case you need to get emergency medical supplies. Make sure your first aid kit is stocked well, and make sure it’s in the car with you.
Get Rid of Junk Before You Move
The more stuff you need to move, the longer it will take. Do yourself a favour and keep two boxes and a bag near you when packing. One box is for the thrift store, one for recyclables, the bag for rubbish. Clear it out as you go to make life easier.
Moving can be stressful, but it doesn’t have to be chaotic if approached correctly.
