After spending hours catching Pokémon and leveling up, you have finally reached Level 5. Now, it’s time to choose a team! But which team is the best, and why? We’re here to help you navigate this decision.
1. Introducing The 3 Teams
Once you hit Level 5 and tap on a gym, you will need to choose between three factions: Valor (Red), Mystic (Blue), and Instinct (Yellow). Each team has a leader and a mascot:
- Team Valor (Red) – Led by Candela, with Moltres as the mascot. Valor focuses on enhancing Pokémon’s natural power and strength.
- Team Mystic (Blue) – Led by Blanche, with Articuno as the mascot. Mystic values wisdom and research on Pokémon evolution.
- Team Instinct (Yellow) – Led by Spark, with Zapdos as the mascot. Instinct believes in the intuition of Pokémon, particularly relating to their hatching.
Team Valor (Red) – Candela (Leader) & Moltres (Mascot)
Pokémon are stronger than humans, and they’re warm-hearted too! I’m researching ways to enhance Pokémon‘s natural power in the pursuit of true strength. There’s no doubt that the Pokémon our team have trained are the strongest in battle! Are you ready?
Team Mystic (Blue) – Blanche (Leader) & Articuno (Mascot)
The wisdom of Pokémon is immeasurably deep. I am researching why they evolve. My team? With our calm analysis of every situation, we can’t lose!
Team Instinct (Yellow) – Spark (Leader) & Zapdos (Mascot)
Pokémon are creatures with excellent intuition. I bet the secret to their intuition is related to how they’re hatched. Come on and join my team! You never lose when you trust your instincts!
2. What’s Your Persona?
Your personal preferences play a big role in choosing a team. Some players support the underdog, while others prefer joining the team with the most followers. Adobe’s social mentions research found that Team Mystic is the most popular, with 45% of discussions, followed by Valor at 32% and Instinct at 25%. While not official, these stats might help you decide.
3. Your Community Matters
Consider the teams of gyms near your home or workplace. It’s practical to join the same team as these gyms for convenience. Once on a team, you can assign your Pokémon to gyms and work with team members to build strong defenses.

4. Jio Your Kakis
Playing with friends enhances the experience. Choose the same team as your friends so you can collaborate on gym battles and train your Pokémon together. This not only strengthens your team but also makes the game more enjoyable.

5. Possible Team Benefits
YouTube InfamousJaleelGaming recently posted a video that explains the benefits of each of the team. While this isn’t confirmed by Pokemon Go yet, it could be a hidden gem. The alleged benefits are as follows:
– Team Instinct (Yellow): Eggs when hatched will be at higher CP and will be given more candies than Mystic and Valor
– Team Mystic (Blue): When evolving Pokemon, Mystic members will have a higher CP after evolutions
– Team Valor (Red): Able to catch Pokemon with a higher CP at a better catch rate than Instinct and Mystic.
If the above is true, then some of the teams have an edge over others in the course of the game. For example, Instinct and Valor are pretty much at a disadvantage in terms of the benefits at the later parts of the game since hatched Pokemon cap is level 20 and wild Pokemon cap is 30. Team Mystic members, on the other hand, enjoys the better end of the bargain as their benefit is useful at any point in the game.
6. Rare Pokemon Potential
Each team has a legendary bird as its mascot. Rumors suggest that team ownership of gyms might influence access to these legendary Pokémon. While unconfirmed, it’s worth considering how team choice might impact your chances of catching these rare creatures.
7. Switching Teams
Unfortunately, this is not an option. Once you pick a team, at least for now, you are stuck with it. You can always create a new account and sign up for a different team that way, but you will obviously be without the current pokemon you have now and will have to work your way back up the levels. Traitors have not been catered for in Pokémon Go.
Pro Tip : For players in rural areas, using a VPN might help find Pokéstops and Pokémon, but be cautious as Pokémon Go may block mismatched locations.
