3 Ways To Save Money And The Planet When Travelling

Who doesn’t want to save money on their travels? Not only that, but if you could do so sustainably, travelling would be even better. It turns out you can. With the planet in a climate crisis and most travel methods using fossil fuels as power, it’s tricky to travel and not consider the impact this has on our environment. Don’t let that stop your travels. Here are some ways to stay on the move without the financial and environmental burden.

1. Go Solar

The idea of camping might remind you of leaky tents as a youngster with the family, but it doesn’t have to be so drab. With the fitting kit and a bit of investment, camping on your travels will save you money and offer peaceful accommodation as an alternative to hotels.

Now, where does the environmental aspect come into the picture? Dependent on the campsite, some will offer electricity hook-up points, and others will not. Regardless, ditch the traditional electrical sources and use solar power instead. Solar power is great even in tents and can become permanent fixtures in caravans and motorhomes.

Solar generators for RVs and the like essentially work as large batteries connected to solar panels. The panels harvest light and heat energy from the sun, which gets stored within the generator for later use.

2. Stay Away from Animal Tourist Attractions

Of course, not participating in any tourist attractions will save you money, but many animals that aren’t cared for by certified zoos aren’t cared for adequately.

Caring for our environment also means standing up for animal rights because wildlife is affected by climate change.

If you’ve ever come across posters with tigers and lions that you can take photos with, don’t participate. Those animals are often sedated and live in poor conditions. A tiger selfie is not worth the animal’s suffering from being forced to pose while being chained, abused and drugged.

Many of these tourist attractions later abandon or sell the animal once it becomes too big, meaning the animal will live the rest of its life in a cage.

3. Reuse Reuse Reuse

Just because you’re on holiday doesn’t mean you should ditch your metal water bottles and fabric tote bags.

Reusing will save you money rather than repeatedly buying new, as well as show some kindness to our plant. You can even travel with your toiletries in reusable bottles, so you don’t need to waste plastic. Many hotels dispose of mini shampoos in the bin rather than recycle them, so stay away from these too.

You can also find reusable products like knives and forks, straws, and makeup-removing washable pads. Simple swaps like this can help you live sustainably even when you’re at home.

Get Saving

It turns out you really can travel on a budget and stay kind to our planet all at the same time. Limit your plastics, try out alternative energy sources, be mindful of tourist attractions and most importantly, have fun!
