Despite having seen Sonos at retailers islandwide and hearing colleagues talk about how amazing the system is, I have always shrugged off the urge that my current CD playing console set (dinosaur) is good enough for the family. It was only with the Sonos Try-Out Programme that I decided to give it a go and arranged for an expert set up service! Sonos One Review – Sonos 101
If you are a mountain tortoise like me, you will need an introduction to Sonos. The Sonos system is a series of wireless speakers that allow you to listen to music anywhere at home simply by controlling your music through an app. The system is so versatile that you can choose to play your favourite tunes on the Sonos speaker in your bedroom while your mom listen in to her usual radio station in the living room via the Sonos speakers there. Everything is done wirelessly and effortlessly over a wifi network set up by the speakers themselves.
Sonos One is designed from the ground up to deliver surprisingly rich sound from a speaker of its size. It is driven by two Class D digital amplifiers, one tweeter, and one mid-woofer and includes a six mic array and an adaptive noise suppression algorithm to focus on you and ensure the voice service understands everything clearly. Its voice capture technology with echo cancellation allows the device to still hear you over the music. I am most impressed with how the volume also intelligently lowers when I speak to it so I don’t have to shout over the music.
Sonos One Review – Setting Up Your Sonos
Even for an absolute noob like myself, I must say the Sonos set up was pleasantly simple. You simply need to download the Sonos app, select ‘Set Up A New System’ and it would guide you through the entire process. The tough part really is deciding which room to place my 2 Sonos. In the end, I decided on my own bedroom where I usually work till late on my articles and the living room where mom spends most of her time during the day at home. 
Tuning the Sonos for each space proved to be a rather entertaining step. To calibrate your Sonos for optimised sound quality for the allocated room, you need to hold your smartphone (with the app) and sort of ‘bless’ the entire space.
Sonos One Review – Auto Radio Every Morning For Mom
Mom just has one simple request for Sonos that is to listen in to her regular local radio station everyday. With Radio by TuneIn built into the app, sourcing and selecting the stations is a breeze.
However, Mom is not exactly tech-savvy (she is alot worse than me), she does not have the patience to download the app and learn how to use it to listen to her regular station. Fortunately, that is not a major issue because I can set an alarm for her Sonos to come alive in the morning as she wakes up for the day!
Sonos One Review – AirPlay
My personal favourite use of Sonos would be to listen to my favourite songs (in amazing quality) on my iPhone via Apple AirPlay. When I get tired of my own library, I can easily switch over to Spotify or even Amazon Music, iHeartRadio, Pandora, SiriusXM, and Radio by TuneIn for local stations.
Sonos One Review – My Very Own Personal Assistant
Every morning, my ‘Good Morning’ will trigger Sonos One to advise me on my day schedule, best route (based on traffic conditions) to work and tell me the key headlines on the news. That’s right, you wield the full potential of Google Assistant and Alexa with Sonos One.
Beyond just music and TV, you get to start a song using AirPlay from Apple Music, ask the Google Assistant to go to the next track, turn the volume down and the most amazing part to request music or content to be played on my second Sonos One in the system. I also find the ability to ask Google Assistant on my daily tasks, set alarms, timers, pull up calendar appointments or get answers on weather, calculations etc extremely useful. Up next, I will be exploring how to connect my Sonos One to Smart Home but let’s start with baby steps.
