South African Local Getaways Are Good For The Soul

We’re so lucky to be blessed with so many beautiful local getaways in South Africa that it really is possible to have a world-class break without breaking the bank! Whether you’re looking for a quick and easy weekend getaway to leave the stress of daily life at home or looking for a fun yet affordable family break to spend some quality time together, there are so many options available. Let’s take a look at some of the less well-known South African local getaways right on our doorstep that are sure to soothe the soul!

South African Local Getaways – Cape Town

As one of the favourite destinations for international travellers to South Africa, it’s easy to see how living in Cape Town can be rewarding in itself – but it’s a different story when you have a stressful job you’d like to escape from time to time too. Luckily the Western Cape is home to many smaller holiday establishments that can give you the time to really enjoy your beautiful surroundings! And just 20 minutes from the city centre, Constantia is the perfect place to do so.

With fine dining opportunities and world-class wineries like Constantia Uitsig, Buitenverwachting, Klein Constantia, Steenberg and Groot Constantia almost literally on your doorstep, it’s a great romantic getaway. And if you’re travelling with the kids, then make sure to take advantage of the stunning hiking, running and cycling trails nestled in the mountains, as well as the many beautiful beaches within easy distance. If golf is your thing, then the Steenberg, Westlake, and Royal Cape courses are right under your nose too, as well as plenty of excellent shopping!

South African Local Getaways – Johannesburg

At just over an hour’s drive from Johannesburg, it’s easy to see why Hartebeespoort is one of Johannesburg’s favourite family getaway spots. The main attraction is the dam, where every member of the family is sure to find an activity they’ll love. Enjoy some water activities like jet boat rides, river rafting or paddle boating, take to the beautiful mountain biking and horse-riding trails, or set a more relaxed pace and visit the cheese academy and craft beer shops, coffee stops, craft markets and even a fine art gallery!

There are also plenty of wildlife experiences at hand at the elephant sanctuary, aquarium, owl rescue centre and many more. To make the experience even more memorable, why not splash out on a hot air balloon or cable car ride?

South African Local Getaways – Durban

About an hour’s drive from Durban, KwaZulu Natal’s stunning South Coast is packed full of charming bed and breakfast spots, camping venues and lodges to suit every taste and budget. The region has become a popular area for ‘minimoons’ – a short romantic break that couples can take every now and then to get a chance to spend some quality time together. And what better way to spend it than by enjoying the area’s many Blue Flag beaches, warm waters, quirky attractions and cosy eateries?

Of course, wherever there are sea and sand, there’s plenty of opportunity for the younger members of the family to enjoy themselves too! From snorkelling and scuba diving in Shelly and Kelso Beach, the natural waterfall at Uvongo Beach, learning to surf at Umzumbe Surf Camp, or marvelling at the slithery creatures at the biggest reptile farm in Africa, Pure Venom!

South African Local Getaways – Pretoria

If you live in Pretoria, then you’ve simply got to take the opportunity to camp out in an authentic oxwagon at Tussen-i-Bome Guest Farm to give the kids something to tell their friends about! The area also has excellent hiking trails and plenty to keep the kids entertained, and best of all it’s just a 30-minute drive from the city.

Chill out poolside and get the chance to meet the guest farm’s resident zebra, Vlekkie, or take part in some of the more adventurous activities on offer, from game drives and a visit to the Lion camp, horse riding, hot air ballooning or visiting the impressive Tswaing Crater meteor impact site!
