Orchard Road got its name from the nutmeg, pepper plantations as well as fruit orchards that the road lead to during the mid-1800s. Today, the rapid urbanisation of Singapore has transformed the area into a 2.2 kilometre-long prime shopping belt for local and tourist alike. Dhoby Ghaut, a major public transport interchange lies on one end of Orchard Road.
