Since December 2015, a team of 10 youths have been volunteering closely with Association for Persons with Special Needs (APSN). APSN provides education, training and support services for persons with mild intellectual disabilities, aiming to equip them with the skills necessary for open employment and lifelong learning.
On 7 March 2016, this group of 10 youths, named APSN Core Volunteer Group (CVG), kicked started a crowdfunding campaign, WheelsforAPSN. Their objective? To raise $46,000 to get a van for APSN. “We found out that APSN’s existing van was going to be scrapped this April,” says Tan Yang Long, leader of the APSN CVG, “We decided that we could help APSN raise funds to get a replacement.”
The van is critical to APSN’s daily operations as it travels around the island to collect donation boxes in restaurants etc. It also transports heavy equipment so that APSN staff and volunteers can set up fundraising booths around Singapore.
The van also carries APSN’s clients to their internship locations. Many of these clients work hard to integrate into society and through job training during their internships; they are able to become contributing members of society. Just as importantly, they earn an income so that they can support themselves in the long-run. Help fuel the dreams of APSN’s clients by giving to the WheelsforAPSN crowdfunding campaign today!
